Health Advice: How Hormones Affect Your Eyes
Optometrist Gina Wesley joined us today to talk about how hormonal changes like pregnancy and menopause can cause changes in a woman's eyesight.
She said that women who are pregnant may be confused about getting eye exams. Not only should pregnant patients keep up with regular eye exams to monitor eye health, but their doctor can help them transition through any vision changes, whether they are permanent or not. Oftentimes, vision will return to normal after delivery.

Contact lens intolerance is very common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes affecting the tears. Pregnant patients who have gestational diabetes should definitely have their eyes examined to ensure no diabetic retinopathy is occurring. It's also a good idea to have the eyes checked after delivery and breast-feeding are completed to get the patient back on track for regular eye care and deal with any changes at that time.
