AMD FAQ with Your Medina Optometrist

AMD is a leading cause of vision loss among people aged 50 and older. Our Medina optometrist frequently answers questions about this eye disease.

Medina Optometrist Answers Frequently Asked Questions about AMD

What is age related macular degeneration?

Age related macular degeneration, also known simply as macular degeneration or AMD, is an eye disease that blurs the “straight ahead” vision you use for driving, reading, and sewing.

What part of the eye does AMD affect?

Macular degeneration affects a specific area of your retina, which is a light-sensitive layer of tissue lining the inside of your eye. Specifically, AMD affects your macula, situated at the center of your retina. As the most sensitive part of the retina, the macula helps you see fine detail.

Is there just one type of AMD?

There are three main stages of AMD and there are two types of AMD: wet and dry.

What happens to the macula?

In AMD, the macula degenerates or breaks down. Degeneration of the tissue causes blurred spots in your central vision, making it difficult to read, see faces, cook, or do household chores.

Does the degeneration stop?

AMD is a progressive disease, which means the degeneration will continue to rob you of your sight for years.

How quickly does AMD progress?

In some cases, macular degeneration occurs quickly. In most cases, however, breakdown of the macula occurs over the course of many years.

Does the condition lead to total blindness?

Macular degeneration does not lead to complete blindness that renders a person unable to see, but it does cause a blank spot in your central vision that complicates most activities of daily living.

Am I at risk for AMD?

Certain factors increase your risk for macular degeneration. Age is a major risk factor, as the disease is most likely to occur after the age of 60. The condition is more common among Caucasians than it is among African Americans or Hispanics/Latinos. Those with a family history of AMD are more likely to develop macular degeneration. Certain lifestyle choices can increase your risk for the sight-robbing disease.

Can I reduce my risk for AMD?

You may be able to reduce your risk of developing AMD or slow its progression by avoiding smoking, engaging in regular exercise, maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and eating plenty of fish and green leafy vegetables. Sun protection, as well as blue light protection, are also recommended.

Can my optometrist in Medina detect AMD?

Yes, your optometrist in Medina uses a comprehensive eye exam and state-of-the-art equipment to diagnose this condition.

Is there a cure for AMD?

There is currently no cure for AMD but macular degeneration treatment in Medina with specific vitamin supplements and anti-VEGF drugs can slow its progression.
